The Unwritten Rules of Hostel Etiquette: A Traveller's Guide

Hostels are the lifeblood of budget travelers, backpackers, and globetrotters seeking affordable accommodation. They provide an excellent opportunity to meet like-minded individuals, exchange travel stories, and make lifelong friends. However, to ensure a harmonious and enjoyable stay for all, don’t forget to follow the unwritten rules of hostel etiquette. Let’s look at the dos and don'ts of hostel life.

Respect the Quiet Hours

One of the cardinal rules of hostel etiquette is respecting quiet hours. Late-night arrivals and early risers are part and parcel of hostel life, so be mindful of your fellow travelers. Keep noise to a minimum during designated quiet hours, usually between 10 PM and 7 AM. Using headphones, dimming the lights, and keeping conversations hushed are all part of being a considerate hostel guest.

Pack Thoughtfully

Hostel rooms can be cozy, and storage space is often limited. Be considerate of your roommates by packing efficiently and using soft-shell luggage that can be easily stashed under your bunk or in a locker. Rustling plastic bags and rummaging through your backpack late at night are sure fire ways to make you the least popular person in the dorm.

Personal Hygiene

Maintaining personal hygiene is not just a matter of self-respect but also a courtesy to your roommates. Regular showers and clean laundry should be a priority. If your shoes or clothes are especially odorous, air them out in common areas and avoid leaving them in the dorm room. Your fellow travelers will thank you for it.

Clean Up After Yourself

Hostels may have communal kitchens or refrigerators. It's crucial to clean up after yourself, whether you're using the kitchen, common areas, or shared bathrooms. Dirty dishes, food scraps, and personal belongings left strewn around can be a source of frustration for others, not to mention can create the perfect environment for pests!

Be Mindful of Privacy

In a hostel, personal space is often limited, and it's important to respect your fellow travelers' boundaries. Never go through others' belongings and use curtains or dividers if provided in your bunk. Also, don't forget to knock before entering a shared dorm room to avoid accidentally walking in on someone.

Socialize Responsibly

Hostels are known for their social atmosphere, but it's important to strike a balance between making friends and respecting personal space. Engage in communal activities, share travel tips, and join in on group outings, but be aware of when someone might prefer some solitude or rest. Also be sure to party responsibly, other guests will not be impressed if they have to deal with a sick or rowdy roommate and hostel management will not hesistate to cancel your booking and send you out the door.

Phones in Communal Areas

The most important word when it comes to phones in hostels is: Respect. Many hostels have communal spaces or quiet spaces where phone calls and loud conversations are discouraged. Use headphones when watching videos and leave the room when taking/making calls to avoid disturbing others in common areas or dorms. Be respectful of those around you and everyone will be comfortable.

Don't Overstay Your Welcome

If you're planning to stay an extra night or two, make sure to communicate your intentions with the hostel staff as soon as possible. Overstaying without notice can lead to complications for both the hostel and other travelers looking for accommodation.

Hostels are fantastic places to meet people, exchange stories, and create lasting memories. By following these unwritten rules of hostel etiquette, you can ensure a positive experience for yourself and your fellow travelers. Respect, consideration, and courtesy go a long way in creating a harmonious and enjoyable hostel environment. Happy travels!
